

2026 Summer Skills Program:
A Summer of Discovery!

The Kiva Center Summer Skills Programs offer a series of focused, hands-on programs for children and teens ages 5–13. Each program centers on developing a specific skill through outdoor, experiential learning—inviting participants to build confidence, curiosity, and meaningful connections with peers. Participants will learn both creative and practical skills, each program offers a distinct experience that supports growth, independence, and joy throughout the summer.
Programs take place on beautiful private land at the base of Lefthand Canyon, just outside of Boulder and nearby communities. This expansive landscape includes rock formations, forested areas, and access to Lefthand Creek, providing a dynamic and inspiring setting for learning and exploration. The land itself becomes a teacher—supporting hands-on practice, focused skill development, and a deepening relationship with the natural world.

PROGRAM OFFERINGS
CRAFTING IN THE WILD
June 15 - 19 | Ages 9 -13

Unleash your inner maker! In this program, kids transform natural treasures into actual, working tools. Throughout the program, children learn how to gather materials respectfully, minimize impact, and express gratitude for the resources they use. The Skill: Participants will learn the secret of building a tool with natural materials. The Takeaway: By the end of the week, they’ll head home with functional tools and a massive boost in confidence. Summer Program Mentors will provide direct instruction, demonstrations, and ongoing supervision to support safety and skill development.
HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT
July 6, 8, 10 | Ages 5-12

Learn the Skill of Camouflage! Ever wonder how animals move through the woods unseen? Now your child can learn their secrets! Using all our senses, movement strategies, and awareness techniques, we will explore different natural landscapes. The Skill: Learn the art of camouflage This is a playful, quiet exploration where kids practice stealthy movement, sensory observation, and the art of camouflage. Using animal behavior and movement, participants will learn how animals remain aware of and adapt to their environment. The Fun: Through epic games of awareness and stealth, participants learn to blend into different landscapes, such as wooded groves, open spaces, and creekbeds. The Takeaway: We focus on slowing down, noticing the small details, and practicing the focus, attention, and impulse control needed to move like the wild. This program prioritizes calm, attentive learning and provides children with tools to increase focus, situational awareness, and respectful engagement with the natural world.
FORAGING
July 20, 22, 24 | Ages 5 -12

Join us to learn the skill of foraging! Through hands-on discovery, participants will learn the art of recognizing common edible and medicinal plants. This program blends exploration and hands-on projects while building the real-world skill of foraging. The Skill: Participants will practice ethical plant gathering as they learn how plants have supported humans across cultures and time. The Takeaway: This program is designed to spark confidence, creativity, and respect for nature. For parents, this means a meaningful, age-appropriate introduction to the skill of foraging in a way kids genuinely love.
ANCIENT WATERCRAFT
July 27–31 | Ages 5 -12

Dive into a program where you will learn the skill of building a raft from natural resources. The Skill: Participants will learn the skill of designing and building a raft to test against the flow of the creek. The Takeaway: Children will develop the capacity leave with deep confidence in their ability to solve problems under pressure and navigate the unknown, all while practicing resourceful stewardship of the land. Through guided practice, demonstrations, and supervised activities, kids will build confidence and competence. Mentors closely monitor participants and reinforce safety expectations at all times.

Mentor-In-Training Program
Know a teen who’s ready to step into leadership? Our MIT (Mentor in Training) program offers teens a unique path to gain real-world outdoor skills and community service hours by assisting our lead mentors in the field—no experience necessary, just a wild heart and a willing spirit.
